SMT. ANNAPOORNI AIYAR – AMMA, 1910–1991
“She never called any of it seva. She just went where she was needed — and in many ways, she never really stopped.”
Amma’s calling was simple: go wherever she was needed. For over fifty years, she walked on foot across every corner of Salcete, carrying herbal remedies and sacred vibhuti from the Kumaraswamy temple in Sandur — to any household, at any hour, in any weather.
Even after the temple was built, she didn’t slow down. She personally carried water to thousands of pilgrims during the Shigmo-Gulal festivities at Zambaulim and the Chaitra Poornima Zatra at Chandreshwar — a tradition the temple continues to this day.
Widowed, and began her life of service
Consecrated the Mandir on 8th February

Through the Women Empowerment Programme and entrepreneurship training, local women learn new skills, start small enterprises, and build a community that supports each other. It’s one of the temple’s fastest-growing initiatives — and its success is exactly why more women keep coming forward to join.
If you know a woman looking to learn a new skill, build an income, or simply find a community — this is where to start.
